Fire & Ice

Did you know that the hills of the Eifel were shaped millions of years ago? Glaciers from the Ice Age and volcanic eruptions gave the low mountain range its distinctive appearance. The 50 maar lakes, known as the "eyes of the Eifel," are one of the most visited natural attractions in the region.

Nature and Geopark Vulkaneifel

The Nature and Geopark Vulkaneifel extends through large parts of the Vulkaneifel and parts of the volcanic West Eifel. About 10,000 years ago, active volcanoes still erupted here, and to this day, you can marvel at maar lakes, lava flows, and mineral and carbonated springs. Red sandstones and marine deposits date back up to 400 million years. The diverse cultural landscape, with its extensive forests and flowing waters, is also home to a rich variety of flora and fauna.

See for yourself—during your vacation in Gerolstein, you have all the time in the world to explore the Vulkaneifel! Additionally, thanks to its proximity to the Ahr, Model, Hunsrück, the Nürburgring, the Belgian Ardennes, and Luxembourg, you can embark on many half-day and full-day excursions.
